Châtelaillon beach
Châtelaillon beach
The defining feature of your holiday at Châtelaillon-Plage, 10 kilometres south of La Rochelle, is the resort’s three kilometres of fine sandy beaches, with views of Fort Boyard and the bridge across to the Ile de Ré.
A beach for all seasons
The esplanade, which follows the line of the beach for three kilometres, is an ideal place for walks on sunny weekends or at any time during your stay, offering fine views of the offshore islands and of Fort Boyard.
It features many restaurants and hotels, where you can enjoy some peace and quiet by the seaside at any time of year.
Châtelaillon beach: setting for a host of activities
Sport
Beach volleyball, beach soccer, gymnastics - Châtelaillon beach is an ideal place for practising your favourite sports. It is also the venue for beginners’ sailing courses organised by the Cercle de Voile.
Reading
The beach is also an ideal place for a good read. The beachside pavilion, beside the lifeguard station, will lend you novels, comic-strip albums and children’s books free of charge.
Total safety
You can swim in Châtelaillon-Plage in total safety.
There are two lifeguard stations keeping watch over the beach:
- from the Casino, in Rue Dr Barraud;
- from Rue Denfert Rochereau, covering the northern end of the beach.
The supervised area is marked by two blue flags and stretches for a distance of roughly 250 metres along the beach and 300 metres out to sea.
The beach is 2.5 kilometres long. Afraid that your children might get lost? There are totem poles all along the beach, which serve as landmarks.
- An elephant: level with Rue Général Lapasset
- A lion: level with Rue Thiers
- A cat: level with the beachside gardens
- A bird: level with the Rue des Dunes
- A panda: level with Rue Sans Nom
- A fish: level with Rue d’Oléron

A beach accessible to persons with reduced mobility
Châtelaillon beach has been awarded the “handiplage” label.
Two installations have been constructed to enable persons with reduced mobility to bathe in the sea.
› Level with the Rue de la Plage, there is a special ramp between the esplanade and the sea;
› a second ramp of this kind has been installed level with the Rue Barraud. Each leads to a cubicle with a shower, a changing-room and two “tiralos”, water-accessible wheelchairs designed especially for bathing.
